Our eyes show us the world: through them we see our own growth and the people we care about. And so, visual ailments can affect our learning, our health, and our lives in general. Therefore, at Buzzi Children’s Hospital, prevention and treatment are equally at home.
Lazy eye, or amblyopia, is among the most easily diagnosed and treated conditions in infants. It develops at a young age and affects 4-5% of children.
In children with lazy eye, the brain deactivates an eye that has suffered a visual defect (myopia, astigmatism, or far-sightedness) more than the other eye. If not treated promptly, lazy eye can result in significant visual impairment and irreversible damage by adulthood, including strabismus.
Early prevention is our best weapon against this condition.
Children don’t visit an ophthalmologist until late in their development – sometimes too late. If, instead, an appropriate screening is performed between 10 and 20 months of age, the disorder can be identified in time, ensuring full recovery.
Thanks to a collaboration with the Comune of Milan, Buzzi has scheduled early ophthalmologist appointments for all children in the city.
Buzzi provides the ophthalmologists, but we need a portable autorefractor.
A portable autorefractor is an essential instrument to ascertain the refraction or analysis of an eye’s characteristics and any problems. The first line of defense against lazy eye.
With a donation, you’ll help us buy a new autorefractor.
Together, we can prevent and cure lazy eye in all of Milan’s children.
