At Vittore Buzzi Children’s Hospital, we have an important childbirth center that deals with extremely premature babies and monochorionic twins.
Buzzi Hospital has also seen to successful completion pregnancies complicated by cerebral malformation, including agenesis of the corpus collosum and pellucid septum, as well as anomalies of the posterior fossa.
The Buzzi Center for Prenatal Diagnosis and Fetal Care is a national leader for families, inclu-ding those from other regions.
We’ve understood through experience that children affected by cerebral malformation are also more likely to present with executive functioning deficits.
These functions underlie all learning and include working memory, motor inhibition, flexibili-ty of thought, motivation, and the ability to sustain focus.
Therefore, these children are accompanied as they grow by a collaborative team of Buzzi specialists. Motor or cognitive difficulties can be addressed in short order when they arise.
Specific software connected to Microsoft Kinect devices can track these young patients’ mo-vements and form the basis for an innovative neuropsychological rehabilitation program.
The kids experience it like a video game, while we hope to find a key tool to restore their exe-cutive function, enabling increased learning and social interaction.
To advance this project, we need to acquire new machines and computers able to run the new rehabilitative software.
